Stephen Smith attended the American Academy of Art in Chicago and also has taught private lessons at the Village Art School in Skokie, Illinois. He has studied with Joe Abbrescia and Bonnie Casey. He also for a time operated a portrait studio. He is currently in the graphic design field and obtained hid Associate Degree in design and desktop publishing from Oakton Community College. He works primarily in oils. He knew he wanted to paint after viewing Kenneth Clark’s Romantic Rebellion in the 70’s. Even though a lot of artists have an influence on him, he tends to lean toward Monet and Van Gogh. As he says, “I try to capture a landscape or a visual emotion of a scene through color and brush strokes. I think of myself as a landscape expressionist painter.”
