Biography
Greg Phillips was raised in Southwest Michigan, where he studied privately. He received a B.A. in art from Hope College. He has worked as a graphic artist and illustrator for the last twenty years. In the last few years he has returned to fine art, showing locally and doing commissions. He works in oil, acrylic, watercolor, pen and ink, and colored pencil. While not doing art he also composes music and sings in several choirs. He is fascinated by art history, and by many ways artists have expressed themselves over thousands of years and around the world. Greg might look at an ancient fresco, A Brueghel crowd scene, a Van Gogh or Dali landscape, a Dore engraving or a pen and ink illustration, and get inspiration. One thing that really gets him working is a visit to a museum or gallery, seeing originals and how their surfaces appear. He wants his paintings to be interesting as surfaces of paint as well as images. Abstract art is not Greg’s field; he believes there should always be a recognizable object, whether the presentation is realistic, naïve or cartoonish. His interest in books and book illustration makes him want to sometimes tell a story, or make a statement, or just show something in an off beat way. Cityscapes as well as landscapes excite him. People are one of the best subjects of all and the most demanding, Greg believes.
