About Us
The founding of the Oak Park art league
took place after World War One when interest in art was
said to be at a low ebb. In 1919 Carl Krafft, our first president, and other local artists began meeting
informally in Krafft's home and formally founded the art league in 1921. Many of the original and early
members were well known artists which helped to establish this art league as a mecca for artists and
art lovers. Early meetings were more frequent and featured demonstrations and lectures not available
anywhere else.
OPAL building:
Our building was purchased in 1937 after a massive fund raising effort. Originally
designed as a coach house and stable in 1901 by architect, E. E. Roberts; it was then redesigned for
art league use by E. E. Roberts who was at that time an artist member; himself. The building was also
briefly used as a private school and the dance studio of Doris Humphrey.
Today, the Art League
not only keeps it's tradition alive, but has expanded its' role in the community. The Art League has introduced
new programs and innovative ways to include all aspects of artistic expression to its' members. Come join
us.
